Carbohydrates: Your Body's Preferred Fuel

Carbohydrates are the body's go-to energy source. When digested, most carbs break down into glucose — a simple sugar the brain, muscles, and organs use for fuel. This is especially important during physical activity and for maintaining steady cognitive function throughout the day.

Not all carbohydrates behave the same way. Complex carbohydrates — found in whole grains, legumes, and vegetables — digest more slowly, providing sustained energy and contributing dietary fiber, which supports digestive health. Simple carbohydrates, especially in heavily processed foods, digest rapidly and can cause sharper spikes and dips in blood sugar levels.

That said, individual protein needs vary considerably based on age, body size, activity level, and health conditions.

Fats: Essential, Not Optional

Dietary fat has carried an undeserved reputation for decades, but research has clarified its importance. Fat is essential for absorbing fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), producing hormones, protecting organs, and supporting brain function — the brain itself is composed largely of fat.

Not all fats are equivalent in their effects. Unsaturated fats — found in olive oil, avocados, nuts, and fatty fish — are widely associated with favorable cardiovascular markers in observational research. Saturated fats, present in animal products and some tropical oils, have more complex relationships with health outcomes that researchers continue to study. Trans fats, largely eliminated from the food supply through regulation, have clearer negative associations.
