What Actually Happens When You Rest

Fitness progress is built on a two-part process: stress and adaptation. When you train, you create microscopic damage in muscle fibers and tax your nervous system. The adaptation — the part where you actually get stronger, faster, or more resilient — happens afterward, during rest. Without adequate recovery, that second phase is cut short.
