Walk into almost any fitness class or scroll through wellness content online, and you'll encounter the terms mobility and flexibility used as if they mean the same thing. They don't — and understanding the difference can meaningfully change how you approach your movement practice.
Flexibility refers to the passive ability of a muscle or group of muscles to lengthen. When you bend forward to touch your toes and feel a pull in your hamstrings, that sensation reflects the limits of your current flexibility. The key word is passive: the muscle is being lengthened by an external force — gravity, a partner's push, or your own body weight — not by active muscular effort.
Mobility, by contrast, is about what your body can do with that range of motion. It's the active, controlled movement of a joint through its full range. A person who can drop into a deep squat and hold it with stability demonstrates hip mobility. That requires not just tissue length but neuromuscular coordination — your muscles and nervous system working together to produce and control movement. How Each Quality Works in Practice

Mobility training looks different. A thoughtful approach might include dynamic mobility work before exercise (joint circles, active stretches) to prepare the body for movement, and static flexibility work after exercise or on recovery days to ease muscle tension and support tissue health.
